How much does a yard of gravel weigh? Use density as a range or project-specific input

A cubic yard tells you volume, not weight. Gravel weight per yard changes with rock type, particle-size distribution, fines, moisture and void space. The reliable method is to keep the cubic-yard quantity visible and pair it with a bulk-density value that applies to the material being purchased.

Volume and weight answer different questions

One cubic yard is exactly 27 cubic feet of volume. Weight is calculated only after a density is applied to that volume. Because bulk aggregate contains voids between particles, the density of solid rock is not the same thing as the bulk density of a loose or compacted aggregate.

This is why a single “tons per yard” number should not be treated as universal.

What changes bulk density

Particle shape and gradation change how efficiently the material packs. Fines can fill voids; moisture adds mass; compaction changes the volume occupied by a given mass. Supplier stockpiles can also vary over time.
