Landscape rock quantity

River rock is commonly planned by volume, while bulk ordering may also be discussed by weight. This calculator keeps those two ideas separate so the geometry can remain deterministic and any weight conversion can use an explicit density supplied for the material.

Measure area and installed depth

For a rectangular bed, multiply length by width to get area and then apply the intended installed depth. If the project contains several beds or shapes, calculate them separately and combine the volumes rather than forcing a single rough rectangle around everything.

Use the depth after placement as the design input. Decorative rock that is too shallow can expose fabric or soil, while deeper placement increases material quickly because the extra depth applies to the full area.

Convert volume to weight only when the density is known

A cubic yard is a unit of volume. Tons and pounds are units of mass or weight. River rock products can have different bulk densities because the stone size distribution, moisture and amount of void space differ.

If a supplier gives a density or a reliable weight-per-volume figure for the exact material, it can be used as an explicit conversion. Otherwise, keep the result in cubic volume and ask the supplier how that material is sold.

Plan irregular landscape areas in pieces

Curved beds, islands and borders are easier to estimate when split into simpler rectangles, circles or segments that can be measured. This also makes the assumptions easier to revisit if the bed edge changes during layout.

The calculator is a quantity tool. It does not decide drainage suitability, edge restraint, subgrade preparation or the appropriate rock size for a specific use.
